How I Wait

How I wait depends on the exigencies of the day.

The obvious opposites are these:

Impatiently.

Patiently.

Really the two rock bottom ways to wait.

 

But also eagerly. Resignedly.

Hopelessly. Hopefully. Courageously.

Passively. Aggressively.

Quietly. Tumultuously.

Invisibly.

 

And no matter the how,

the heart of it all is the waiting.

We know the inevitable

but the key is to forget it,

transcend it,

fill our hearts so completely

that there's no room for inevitables

or for waiting, no matter

how we festoon it with modifying adverbs.

 

We are waiting.

We need to know this

but then to forget it and go about our business.

Fully.
