A default position of mending,
mandated by my mother's example
and by my natural bent toward thrift,
teaches me the beauty of the stitch.
Glitzy sequins hide the join
of leftover sewn to remnant.
Feather-stitch embellishes a seam.
The whole is a cosmic crazy-quilt
of stars and fiery comets
in the service of waste-not-want-not,
never just a make-do affair
but an opportunity to fire up the blaze,
to illumine the ordinary by shine and sheen and spark.
Stitch it!
