To make an impression,
you hide whatever you can of your truth,
your ignoble motives,
your secret judgments—
in short, much of your complicated self.
Let them see you as affable.
Let them imagine you as being just like them—
or close enough as makes no difference.
Let them not be aware of the threat
you pose to their peace and equanimity.
Will you ever let them see you?
The world is not ready for the wild rage,
the unhinged thoughts of your truth.
You can only wonder:
Does everyone harbour a secret self
beneath the presenting façade?
And if all those masks shattered,
in one great revelatory explosion,
what fierce and effective energy
would be released upon our poor, needful world?
